Open Mic Poetry Reading
Mrs. Faircloth’s third grade class recently hosted an Open Mic event to showcase the poetry her students had written. Each child spent one week choosing a topic, writing drafts, and editing the final copy.
In preparation for writing their own poems, the students learned about various types of poetry, and read poetry by Langston Hughes, Lewis Carrol, Shel Silverstein, as well as various student and teacher created poems. They also created their own Haikus, Limericks, Acrostic Poems, and Cinquains.
Encouraging the children to step on stage and read their poetry before their peers and parents is beneficial in several ways. It builds self-confidence, gives a sense of pride in their accomplishments, and enhances their communication skills.
This open mic event is one example of the many ways the teachers here at SKTCS support the development of each child, and encourage their creativity.
